Japanese is written using a combination of KANJI, ideographic characters borrowed from Chinese, and KANA , purely phonetic symbols which make up two distinct syllabaries: HIRAGANA (the principal syllabary) and KATAKANA( used today primarily for writing foreign words and onomatopoeia).
The co-existence of these systems gives the writing and calligraphy of Japanese a great richness.

-The birth of Japanese calligraphy-
There was originally no indigenous written language in Japan. Chinese writing was known, but it was the introduction of Buddhism and Confucianism from China which accelerated the assimilation of Chinese characters into Japan. They became known as KANJI. The materials used for calligraphy where also imported into Japan, probably around the same time, from China and the kingdoms of Korean peninsula.
